Biography
Gareth joined SHUSU in 2009 following the completion of postgraduate study in Social Work. As a qualified Social Worker he has experience of working with a number of socially excluded groups including those with mental health problems, and refugees and asylum seekers.
Research Interests and Experience
Gareth has broad research interests within social exclusion and has had a large involvement in the studies of migrant workers and BME communities. He is currently involved in a study into the biographies of homeless people in Stoke-on-Trent and is exploring the use of social media among these communities. He maintains a blog for this project which can be found at homelessinstoke.com.
Gareth is also undertaking PhD research into the psychological dimension of the person-place relationship, also in Stoke-on-Trent. He is interested in the affective bonds that citizens have with the city and how this is played out within the mobility/fixity dialectic.
